HOMEWOOD, Alabama — This story bridges worlds.
From Samford University to 7,880 miles away in the African country of Uganda, this story began last year on an ordinary Sunday morning at the Baptist Church of the Covenant in Downtown Birmingham.
When Crystal Pate looked down the aisle and saw her Samford University hall-mate Alisha Damron for the first time in seven years, she never would have imagined the chain of events that would follow.
At the service, Damron introduced Pate to her new husband, Abdul Seruyange of Uganda. After a lot of small talk and catching up, the pair realized that although their lives had taken very different directions over the years, one important thing still bridged them together: A love of soccer.
